Originally commissioned by the Griffiths Brothers in the early 1900's, the building’s design reflected the red brick Romanesque Revival style popular at the time in Flinders Street and Flinders Lane. Elaborately bestowed with a façade of decorative render bands, an upper storey colonnade and giant arcade order with oriel elements, this iconic building has stood the test of time and is a key piece of Melbourne's hidden gems.
This print is part of an ongoing poster series exploring the iconic and sometimes understated architecture of Melbourne.
Each poster is digitally illustrated by hand and stripped of the everyday noise that normally surrounds these buildings. Doing this allows you to view the building with a sense of calm and isolation and experience the design in a way in which the architects skill is fully appreciated.
